We’re looking for a VP of Technology who’s equal parts visionary and hands-on builder to lead the next phase of our digital evolution. From website performance to SEO strategy, data pipelines to business intelligence—you’ll architect the systems that help our journalism reach and resonate with millions.

Responsibilities 

• Lead Courier’s Data Analytics and Data Engineering teams to ensure efficient operations, accurate data collection, insightful analysis, and impactful business reporting.
• Drive website optimization strategy across development, design, and content, ensuring seamless site operations, fast load times, high performance, and a frictionless user experience that supports organic audience growth.
• Oversee the strategic implementation of SEO tools and best practices to maximize visibility and discoverability across platforms.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with Revenue and Editorial teams to develop and deploy data-informed digital products and experiences aligned with Courier’s mission and business goals.
• Oversee Courier’s technology stack and internal tooling to ensure scalability and reliability.
• Champion data-driven decision-making across the organization.
• Manage cybersecurity protocols for Courier’s digital systems.
• Own technology budgets, vendor relationships, and resource planning.
• Stay current on emerging digital media technologies and trends, and recommend their implementation where relevant.
• Oversee cyber security for Courier Newsroom’s digital infrastructure.
• Manage technology budgets, resource allocation, and project prioritization.

The ideal candidate will have some of the following:

• 8+ years in technology roles, with at least 3 in leadership, ideally in digital media or content-driven environments.
• Proven experience leading high-performing engineering, data and web teams.
• Strong understanding of CMS platforms (WordPress, headless CMS), web architecture, and APIs.
• Deep knowledge of SEO principles, web analytics, and tools like GA4, GTM, and Search Console.
• Excellent project management skills, with a demonstrated ability to lead projects to completion on time and within budget.
• Exceptional communicator who can collaborate cross-functionally and is comfortable operating at both strategic and execution levels.
• Experience with or knowledge of the following: 
  • Programming languages and operating systems
  • Enterprise backup and recovery procedures
  • System performance-monitoring tools
  • Active directories
  • Virtualization, HTTP traffic, content delivery, and caching.
• Proficient in risk mitigation and data security of digital assets.
• Passionate about journalism, storytelling, and technology’s role in civic engagement.
