Who We Are:
Nirvana is on a mission to harness the power of data to revolutionize commercial insurance and enable a safer world. We are bringing much-needed innovation into the legacy, trillion-dollar commercial insurance industry. We have developed cutting-edge predictive models that use real-time IoT data from billions of connected devices, allowing us to better understand and price risk. Our AI-driven platform fundamentally changes the way an insurance company operates with personalized risk scoring, faster underwriting, modernized claims, and proactive, data-driven insights to help customers prevent accidents.
We’ve already proven the scale—reaching well over $100 million in premiums and more than doubling year over year. Our data moat is growing exponentially with more than 20 billion miles of telematics data, leading to more predictive models and new insights into how we can better understand and reduce risk. Altogether, our loss ratio, efficiency, and customer experience are redefining what can be done in the industry.
With $170+ million raised, including an industry-leading Series C round in January 2025, we’re only accelerating our growth, with strong support from top-tier VCs including Lightspeed, General Catalyst, and Valor. Nirvana’s leadership team has previously helped scale multi-billion-dollar companies from scratch, including Samsara, Rubrik, and Flexport, and includes industry veterans from Hiscox, The Hartford, and RLI.
About the role:
As a Fullstack Senior Software Engineer II at Nirvana, you will:
Own and Innovate: You will take ownership of key parts of the product and guide them from concept to completion with a customer-driven focus. You'll work on transformative products like our fleet safety AI coach, which uses AI and IoT data to enhance road safety and cut costs for our customers. Additionally, you'll play a key role in developing consumer-grade software for claims, payments, and insurance management, powered by AI models that streamline traditionally manual processes, ensuring faster turnarounds and a superior customer experience.
Build team and culture: At Nirvana, we believe that culture is the secret sauce in building a great engineering team. You will build and embody this culture - and set the bar high as we continue to build the company.
Build a modern commercial insurance platform. We are building the industry’s first consumer quality insurance platform for commercial auto insurance brokers. You will deliver a seamless experience to brokers + fleet owners from quote to claim, and instrument + understand customer journeys to iteratively improve UX and reduce friction points.
Get involved in GenAI technologies. We are actively shipping features that improve our internal and external users' lives with the help of GenAI and key pieces of data. We want you to engage, experiment and deliver more exciting features using these systems.
Build safety tools. Help prevent accidents by delivering actionable safety information through effective multi-channel touch points. Engage and educate customers about what’s contributing to their high premiums and how they can reduce them.
Lead technical initiatives. You are expected to lead technical discussions and challenges collaborating with other engineers from your team or others by engaging in RFCs, Code Reviews and proposing architectural changes and establishing best practices.
Build using a modern, open-source stack. You will develop on top of a frontend stack composed mainly of React, TypeScript and GraphQL and a backend stack focused on Go. We primarily rely on AWS and Terraform to serve our architecture
About You:
You are an owner. You are comfortable owning large parts of our product and driving the development and roadmap.
You ship. You get satisfaction from getting your features into customers' hands in a short period of time. You take accountability for the end-to-end product experience of your features, warts and all.
You have a design sense. You care about the design, have a problem-solver mindset, and enjoy partnering with designers to bring projects to life with attention to detail.
You are user-focused. You put the user first with a keen sense of how your code will impact the user's experience in terms of performance, security, and usability.
You are a lifelong learner. You learn quickly and can operate independently. You're not afraid to take something on just because you don’t know how to do it yet.
You value clear, open communication. You not only have the ability or skill to communicate effectively but also have the willingness to be open and honest in your communication. You demonstrate these abilities through thoughtful code reviews, honest and kind feedback, and documentation.
Requirements:
A well-rounded engineer with product-building experience. You have at least 5 years of experience building web apps from the ground up using modern JavaScript libraries like React or a similar framework. You also have similar experience creating backend/cloud services using Node.js, Go, Python or similar, and are familiar with cloud/microservice architecture foundations for communication, storage and infrastructure
Design-oriented. You have an interest in UI/UX to build scalable design systems. You enjoy working directly with designers and product specialists to make the customer experience amazing.
Strong engineering fundamentals. You can break up a complex system into clean reusable components, and design interfaces and abstractions given the way you expect internal and external users to consume them.
