The Director of Technical Accounting/Finance will serve as a senior level advisor on technical accounting matters, provide support as a Technical VP on client projects, provide internal staff training, and oversee and guide staff on technical, operational and reporting matters. The Director will be a leader responsible for directing and executing accounting and reporting to a diverse portfolio of clients, primarily the technology, med-tech and life sciences sectors.  Will contribute to the overall strategic direction and operational activities within the firm.  Will collaborate with clients’ executive management, third parties including auditors, tax advisors, legal counsel, lending institutions, shareholders, and other stakeholders by performing the following functions. 

Essential Functions – Client Management 
Technical Skills
  • Oversee and direct technical accounting projects at both private and public company clients, oversee ongoing accounting and finance resources, and other related areas including investor and/or external reporting.
  • Evaluate and determine appropriate accounting treatment for complex technical accounting and reporting matters in accordance with GAAP.
  • Coordinate with tax accountants for timely and accurate reporting of income, sales/use, VAT and other tax requirements in all appropriate jurisdictions.
  • Develop and maintain accounting processes to ensure compliance with a system of internal controls for consistency and accuracy of recording financial information.
  • Review and/or prepare timely consolidation of subsidiaries, including foreign currency translation and recognition of foreign currency gains and losses.
  • Drive efforts related to financial audit, tax compliance, and regulatory filings and coordinate with audit, tax, and other respective personnel.
Operational Skills
  • Appraise the organization's financial position and issue periodic reports on financial stability, liquidity, and growth to internal and external constituents.
  • Possess a working knowledge to set up and manage all aspects of accounting including systems, consolidations, cost accounting, grants, and financial reporting including drafting financial statements and footnotes in accordance with GAAP.
  • Oversee analysis of operational issues impacting functional groups and the whole entity and determine their financial impact.
  • Establish and maintain contacts with shareholders, financial institutions, and other third parties as appropriate.
  • Oversee and direct the preparation and issuance of the client’s Board package materials/presentations and annual report. Present to boards of directors as needed.
  • Review and/or support evaluation of cost accounting requirements, including product costing, overhead absorption, and inventory reserves.
  • Develop and maintain accounting processes to ensure compliance with a system of internal controls.
  • Prepare budgets, forecasts, and related revisions.
Essential Functions – Management Team
  • Lead, direct and develop accounting professionals.  Coach and empower junior staff to research answers in their efforts to support client needs.
  • Identify and create training materials and/or sessions that are beneficial to the MM consultants and their clients.
  • Interview, hire, and train employees; plan, assign and direct work.
  • Manage employee performance including writing/delivering annual performance evaluations, coaching team members for success, addressing and solving employee concerns.
  • Evaluate and recommend strategic business opportunities.
  • Promote MM presence in the market and attract new clients by attending networking events and identifying and exploring sales and business development opportunities as may be appropriate. 
  • Identify and research opportunities that come up in new and existing markets.
  • Coordinate with other departments to provide clients with full-service offering, including recruiting assistance, HR and CFO advisory support.
  • Create positive, long-lasting relationships with current and potential clients.  
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance. MBA a plus.
  • CPA/CA Designation with audit experience, preferably large national or multinational firm. Big 4 a plus.
  • 8-12 years of Accounting/Finance business industry experience including a proven track record successfully leading, coaching, and mentoring a team of direct reports.
  • Experience in managing highly skilled work teams throughout a client’s project lifecycle ensuring problems are resolved and deliverables are met.
  • Strong business acumen, analytical, problem solving skills, with the ability to provide vision, leadership and inspiration to teams.
  • Deep knowledge of industry experience in technology (ideally SaaS as well as hardware companies), medical device, and life science preferred including start-up companies.
  • Demonstrated success in identifying, initiating, and nurturing new or on-going business opportunities.
  • Superior Excel skills and proven ability to model full financial statements. Budgets and forecasts (integrated P&L, BS, and CF) a plus.
  • SEC Reporting experience.
  • Consolidations and international accounting experience.

Our salary ranges are based on paying competitively for our size and industry.  Individual pay decisions are based on a number of factors, including qualifications for the role, experience level, skillset, and balancing internal equity relative to peers at the company. The ranges shared are for the expectations as laid out in the job description, however we are often open to a wide variety of profiles and recognize that the person we hire may be less experienced or more senior than this job description as posted. If that ends up being the case, the updated salary range will be communicated with you as a candidate.
 
Salary range for candidates in the San Francisco Bay Area is: $175k-$200k
Salary range for candidates in the US outside of the San Francisco Bay Area is: $140-$170k
