Job description

About Collective:

Collective is on a mission to redefine the way businesses-of-one work. Collective’s technology and team of trusted advisors enables our members to achieve financial independence by taking care of everything from business incorporation to accounting, bookkeeping, tax services and access to a thriving community, all in one integrated platform.  We believe in empowering self-employed people to enjoy the same tax savings that big companies get.

Featured in Forbes, Business Insider, Yahoo, Bloomberg, Financial Times, Techcrunch and more. We’re backed by General Catalyst, Sound Ventures (Ashton Kutcher and Guy Oseary), QED Investors, Google’s Gradient Ventures, Expa and prominent investors who have financed and built iconic companies like YouTube, Substack, Twitch, Box, Hims, Instacart, Lyft, and more.

About the Role:

Collective is on a mission to revolutionize the way solopreneurs run their businesses, and we’re looking for an experienced Product & Privacy Counsel to join our lean but mighty legal team. Reporting directly to the General Counsel, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping the legal framework that enables innovation and growth while managing regulatory risk.

In this role, you’ll be working hand-in-hand with product, engineering, and go-to-market teams to build creative, business-friendly solutions that protect our customers and drive growth. If you thrive in fast-paced environments, enjoy tackling novel challenges, and take pride in your work, we’d love to meet you!

⚒️ Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Product Counseling: Serve as the go-to legal advisor for product and eng, ensuring our solutions balance innovation with compliance in a user-friendly way.
  • User-Facing Legal Terms: Draft, refine, and humanize our terms of service, privacy policies, and user agreements, making them clear, approachable, and confidence-inspiring.
  • Delightful Efficiency: Build scalable legal processes (templates, playbooks, self-serve tools) that empower teams to move fast and smart.
  • Privacy by Design: Lead our privacy initiatives, proactively addressing CCPA/CPRA, GLBA, and other regulatory frameworks while driving a privacy-first culture within the company.
  • Cross-functional Innovation: Work across departments to identify opportunities where legal expertise can drive product innovation.

🙌 What we want you to bring:

  • 5-8 years of legal experience, including at least 3+ years advising on FinTech product counseling, privacy compliance, and user-facing legal terms.
  • JD from an accredited law school and active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Strong expertise in U.S. privacy laws (CCPA/CPRA, GLBA) and a pragmatic approach to compliance in a rapidly evolving tech landscape.
  • Proven ability to draft & maintain user-friendly legal terms that enhance trust and user experience.
  • A business-oriented mindset—you see legal as an enabler and can translate complex legal concepts into actionable strategies.
  • Experience working with frontier technologies (AI, machine learning, large language models) and understanding their legal implications.
  • Exceptional communication skills—you can explain nuanced legal issues to non-legal stakeholders in a way that’s engaging, concise, and practical.
  • A bias for action & ownership—you love solving problems, taking initiative, and working collaboratively in an agile startup environment.

Why work with us:

  • Collective is the first online back office platform designed for Businesses-of-One.
  • Tax is a very challenging space, and you will grow fast.
  • We were backed by top-tier VCs.
  • We promote an open and transparent culture within the company.
