Job description

Who are we?

Our mission is to scale intelligence to serve humanity. We’re training and deploying frontier models for developers and enterprises who are building AI systems to power magical experiences like content generation, semantic search, RAG, and agents. We believe that our work is instrumental to the widespread adoption of AI.

We obsess over what we build. Each one of us is responsible for contributing to increasing the capabilities of our models and the value they drive for our customers. We like to work hard and move fast to do what’s best for our customers.

Cohere is a team of researchers, engineers, designers, and more, who are passionate about their craft. Each person is one of the best in the world at what they do. We believe that a diverse range of perspectives is a requirement for building great products.

Join us on our mission and shape the future!

Why this role?

The Model Efficiency team advances Cohere base models’ speed, reduces model size, and increases compute efficiency through improving model architecture and optimizing ML frameworks. As a Manager of Technical Staff, you will play a crucial role in shaping the future direction of our engineering efforts, inspiring a team of talented engineers, and contributing to the company's overall success.

As an Engineering Manager, Model Efficiency, you will:
  • Own the team's technical strategy and roadmap by setting metrics, and product-focused goals.

  • Identify skill gaps and resource needs in the team, hire talented engineers to fill those gaps, while continuously raising the bar.

  • Have a deep understanding of ML accelerators, model architectures, and how to optimize their model performance on accelerators for inference.

  • Make suitable judgement calls on the choice of inference frameworks and strategies for optimization balancing risk versus impact.

  • Work with product managers, tech leads, and machine learning engineers to build out engineering plans or capture requirements.

  • Manage the team's workload and priorities, ensuring timely delivery of projects.

  • Mentor and coach team members, providing guidance on technical skills and career development.

You may be a good fit if:
  • You have a proven track record as a people leader (3+ years of experience in engineering management); you are passionate about building rapport with your team and you prioritize 1:1s.

  • You have hands-on experience with large language models (LLMs).

  • You have experience developing large foundation models, distributed training infrastructure, and/or inference frameworks.

  • You have excellent presentation and communication skills, and you are comfortable explaining technical topics to non-technical users or members of other teams.

  • You are passionate about recruiting, and growing people and teams.

  • You are comfortable leading multiple projects and adjusting processes quickly when priorities change.

If some of the above doesn’t line up perfectly with your experience, we still encourage you to apply! If you want to work really hard on a glorious mission with teammates that want the same thing, Cohere is the place for you.

We value and celebrate diversity and strive to create an inclusive work environment for all. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and are committed to providing equal opportunities. Should you require any accommodations during the recruitment process, please submit an Accommodations Request Form, and we will work together to meet your needs.
