Executive Medical Director of Population Health (Remote)

Job Overview:

The Executive Medical Director of Population Health is a senior leadership position with both clinical and administrative functions.

The clinical senior leadership function is within a multidisciplinary mental health team, responsible for overseeing the clinical management and delivery of psychiatric care to our population with Serious Mental Illness (SMI), substance use disorders (SUD), and dementia. This role involves providing direct psychiatric care, leading a team of clinicians (including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and other mental health professionals), and ensuring that high-quality, patient-centered care is delivered within a collaborative, evidence-based framework. The Executive Medical Director is instrumental in coordinating care, optimizing team performance, and contributing to the overall strategic goals of the mental health services program. The effort allocated to this clinical function is 0.6 FTE for both direct clinical care and supervisory responsibilities with the ratio between these changing based on the number of psychiatric nurse practitioners being supervised.

The administrative function of Population Health entails overseeing and advancing the population health strategy within the organization. This role combines clinical expertise with strategic oversight to improve the health outcomes of our patient population with SMI, SUD and dementia, reduce costs, and enhance the quality of care. The Executive Medical Director will work closely with the Population Health team, healthcare providers, administrators, and other stakeholders to design, implement, and evaluate population health initiatives. This leader will leverage data-driven insights, clinical expertise, and strategic leadership to shape and guide the delivery of care across multiple settings. In this role, The Executive Medical Director will also partner and support the Compliance and Risk Management team as the clinical expert. This individual will also serve as a key liaison between clinical and executive leadership to ensure alignment with organizational goals. The effort allocated to this administrative function is 0.4 FTE.

Key Responsibilities 

Clinical:

1. Clinical Leadership & Oversight:

• Provide psychiatric leadership to a designated psychiatry pod (team), ensuring the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based care to patients.
• Conduct psychiatric assessments, diagnoses, and treatment planning, utilizing a variety of therapeutic interventions and medications as appropriate.
• Oversee the implementation of treatment plans, ensuring coordination among team members and consistency in care delivery.

• Lead, mentor, and supervise a multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals, including psychiatrists, social workers, care manager nurses and medical assistants.
• Foster a collaborative, supportive team environment focused on patient-centered care, communication, and continuous learning.
• Conduct regular case reviews, peer supervision sessions, and provide constructive feedback to ensure professional development and adherence to best practices.
• Provide regular supervision and support to respective pod psychiatric nurse practitioners

• Manage the psychiatric care of patients within the pod, including diagnostic assessments, treatment planning, medication management, and crisis intervention when needed.
• Collaborate with other team members at Author Health and patient’s primary care providers to address the full range of patient needs, ensuring holistic care.
• Ensure continuity of care by monitoring patient progress, adjusting treatment plans as necessary, and ensuring follow-up care is provided.

• Advocate for the adoption of best practices in mental health care and contribute to continuous quality improvement efforts within the team and organization.
• Implement and monitor clinical protocols and guidelines that enhance the quality of psychiatric care.
• Participate in outcome measurement and quality assurance initiatives to improve patient outcomes.

• Respond to psychiatric emergencies within the pod, including crisis intervention and de-escalation strategies.
• Coordinate with emergency services, family members, and other health professionals in complex or high-risk situations.

• Serve as a key liaison between the psychiatric pod and other departments, including primary care, chronic care management, and community services.
• Ensure effective communication with patients, families, and external providers regarding treatment plans, progress, and any necessary adjustments.
• Facilitate regular team meetings, promoting interdisciplinary communication and coordination of care.

• Oversee the operational aspects of the psychiatry pod, including scheduling, resource allocation, and workload management.
• Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures to improve team efficiency and effectiveness.
• Contribute to strategic planning and goal setting for the psychiatric services division.

• Support recruitment process, interview candidates and providing input in hiring process
• Support clinician onboarding training 
• Provide training, education, and support to staff on emerging psychiatric treatments, evidence-based practices, and organizational policies.
• Lead and facilitate workshops, case presentations, and continuing education for the clinical team.
• Stay current with advancements in psychiatric care and mental health research, integrating new knowledge into clinical practice.

Administrative:

1. Leadership & Strategy Development:

• Provide visionary leadership for the population health strategy, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
• Develop and execute population health initiatives that improve outcomes, increase efficiency, and reduce health disparities.
• Work collaboratively with senior leadership and other departments to integrate population health strategies across the organization.

• Oversee clinical care models designed to improve care delivery and patient outcomes for diverse populations.
• Lead efforts to implement evidence-based clinical protocols, guidelines, and best practices.
• Identify areas for quality improvement and work to enhance the overall patient experience and clinical outcomes.

• Lead initiatives aimed at managing the health of patient populations, focusing on prevention, chronic disease management, and care coordination.
• Use data analytics to identify high-risk populations and develop targeted interventions to manage and reduce healthcare costs.
• Support the development and implementation of value-based care models, including bundled payments, accountable care organizations (ACOs), and other reimbursement structures.

• Foster collaboration with healthcare providers, payers, public health agencies, and community organizations to enhance population health management.
• Develop and maintain relationships with physicians, nurses, care teams, and other clinical staff to ensure effective implementation of population health initiatives.
• Advocate for policies and practices that support population health goals at the local, state, and national levels.

• Analyze population health data to track outcomes, identify trends, and make data-driven decisions.
• Ensure the implementation of robust data management systems to support population health initiatives and monitor progress toward key performance indicators (KPIs).
• Promote the use of health IT systems and tools to enhance clinical decision-making and improve patient care coordination.

• Develop and manage budgets related to population health programs and initiatives.
• Oversee efforts to reduce healthcare costs by improving the efficiency and effectiveness of care delivery.
• Work with finance and operations teams to ensure population health programs are financially sustainable.

• Provide clinical education and training to healthcare providers and staff involved in population health initiatives.
• Promote continuous learning in the organization regarding the principles of population health and value-based care.
• Serve as a mentor and resource for other clinical leaders within the organization.

• Ensure all population health initiatives comply with federal, state, and local regulations.
• Stay informed of healthcare policy changes, particularly those related to value-based care and population health, and advise leadership accordingly.

• Partner with compliance and risk management team to provide support and clinical expertise in the following domains: 

1. identifying, assessing, and mitigating potential risks within the organization by developing and implementing comprehensive compliance policies, procedures, and training programs, 
2. ensuring adherence to relevant regulations, conducting regular audits, and reporting on compliance status to senior leadership; 
3. effectively communicating risk management strategies throughout the company to foster a positive risk culture

Qualifications:

• Education / Licensure / Certifications:
  
  
• Medical Degree (MD or DO) and Board certification in Adult Psychiatry is required
• Active medical licensure in the states of practice, Florida and Texas and other states as services are scaled nationally
• Additional board certification in Geriatric Psychiatry, Consultation Liaison Psychiatry, Addiction Psychiatry is preferred.
• Advanced degree in public health (MPH) or healthcare administration (MHA, MBA) is a plus.
• Experience:

• Significant experience in clinical psychiatry, preferably in a leadership or team-based environment.
• Strong knowledge of psychiatric conditions, treatment modalities, and current best practices in the field.
• A minimum of 5+ years of clinical experience with patients with serious mental illness, substance use disorders or dementia 
• A minimum of 3-5 years experience supervising psychiatric nurse practitioners
• A minimum of 3-5 years experience cross-functionally collaborating with Chronic Care Management services. 
• Proven experience leading, managing, or supervising multidisciplinary teams.
• At least 7-10 years of clinical experience in healthcare delivery, with a focus on population health management, care coordination, or quality improvement.
• Minimum of 3-5 years in a leadership role related to population health or healthcare operations.
• Previous experience with start-up, health insurance (payers) and/or product development industry preferred

• This is a remote position with occasional travel for meetings, conferences, and site visits  with external partners or healthcare stakeholders as needed.
