About the Opportunity 

Reporting to the Managing Director, CGI Sponsorships and serving as a key member of the Development team, this position advances the mission of the Clinton Foundation (“Foundation”) through the engagement and solicitation of institutional funders, primarily corporations and private foundations. Specifically, this includes the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of an assigned portfolio of existing and prospective funders, with the goal of significantly increasing sponsorship revenues primarily in support of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) and its Annual Meeting.

The Development Director, CGI Sponsorships at the Clinton Foundation is a proactive, confident self-starter that thrives in a fast-paced environment that values results. S/he is persistent and driven to succeed in leading efforts to grow a robust pipeline of institutional philanthropic support and in setting and exceeding goals.

Core Responsibilities  

Cultivation, Solicitation, and Stewardship

  • Originates gifts, grants, and sponsorships, primarily from a portfolio of 50 existing and prospective institutional funders (i.e., corporations and foundations) to meet or exceed annual revenue goals ($2-3 million in revenue; 70% retention rate year-on-year)
  • Oversees a robust proposal pipeline of 100 qualified potential funders and continuously prospects for significant new funding opportunities/fits with CGI’s needs and priorities.
  • Identifies and establishes key relationships with new businesses, philanthropists, and individuals/firms that can support engagement with new prospects.
  • Creates compelling programmatic opportunities for institutional funders to support the initiative, including year-round offerings and benefits for sponsors, as well as bespoke partnerships.
  • Represents the Foundation and CGI at various events to cultivate relationships, meet new prospects, and enhance CGI’s visibility.
  • In collaboration with the Managing Director, develops and coordinates cultivation and solicitation strategies for current and prospective funders, including the appropriate utilization of CGI leadership, program staff, and other Foundation leaders.
  • Engages proactively with other CGI initiatives, including CGI-U / Fellows / ORN to secure financial and/or in-kind sponsorships and contributes to the greater CGI sponsorship team strategy and scope of work.
  • Creates sponsorship decks, comparison reports, overview docs, and/or other presentation materials for Managing Director, CDO, CGI CEO and other executives for meetings with prospective funders.
  • Authors proposal narrative and related content, budgets, and supporting documentation for sponsorship/grant proposals, with great attention to detail, working closely with relevant staff to increase the accuracy of information – particularly for written sponsorship proposals and customized presentations.
  • Executes overall stewardship plan and contract deliverables for assigned funders/sponsors and works with Managing Director and CGI staff to ensure benefits in funding agreements are fulfilled and committed funds are paid in a timely manner.
  • Maintains accurate, timely, and comprehensive records in CRM database and Airtable, including key contacts, decision-makers/influencers, interactions, next steps, prospect plans, tracking of proposals, commitments, reporting requirements, and other stewardship activity.
  • Supervises Development staff contributions to copywriting and design of CGI sponsorship marketing materials, to the Airtable/CRM integration, and all internal CGI communications.

Internal Stakeholder Management

  • Represents CGI Sponsorship team in all weekly pillar and program meetings with the goal of improving quality and content of communications with CGI colleagues.
  • Maintains consistent collaboration with CGI staff to understand projects, priorities, and to identify new funding opportunities.
  • Leads cross-departmental engagement with Foundation colleagues for all team needs, including collateral creation, financial reports, and partnership deliverables, and liaise with broader Development team on behalf of CGI.
  • Oversees deliverables for CGI Sponsors in partnership with CGI team.
  • Provides mentorship and support for new hires as requested.

Events and Operations

  • Leads processes for all on-site services for sponsors including VIP schedules and briefings, reserved seating, staffing of VIP meetings and dinners, and other additional duties as required.
  • Plans and executes additional sponsor events, including invitation design and distribution, guest list management, creation of registration link, transportation, on-site run of show, staffing and follow-up.
  • Participates in CGI events as needed, including travel both internationally and domestically.
  • Contributes to interview process, onboarding, and integration of new CGI Sponsorship team members.
  • Collaborates with CGI staff to understand projects, priorities, and to identify new funding opportunities.
  • Keeps current on news, trends, and best practices associated with Foundation grants and grantmaking opportunities.

Minimum Qualifications  

What we’re looking for: 

  • Bachelors’ Degree or equivalent experience
  • Minimum Required: At least 10 years of professional experience in the field in positions of increasing responsibility. At least 1 of those years must have been directing a function. At least 5+ of those years must have included managing event sponsorship projects to completion institutional giving, grant writing/proposal development, or similar fundraising experience in a similar role at an organization of comparable size and complexity.
  • Portfolio management experience and working within complex organizations beneficial.
  • Proficient with CRM systems, MSOffice, and Internet required.

Compensation & Benefits 

Our best estimate of the compensation range for this opportunity is $121 - 131K annually, depending on the experience you bring. This role is not for overtime pay.
