Binnies an RSK Group company is looing for
Principal/Chief Engineers to join our
Water Services Reservoir Team to help deliver our clients’ dam safety programmes of work. It is expected that candidates will have extensive technical experience of working on reservoirs.
The candidate should have a strong technical base and have good experience in the appraisal, design and supervision of dam safety schemes. The primary purpose of the role is to lead and co-ordinate studies, inspections and design within the reservoir engineering team ensuring consistent quality and timeliness of output. In addition to providing technical oversight for projects, you would also support our team’s growth by managing and encouraging the development of our engineers and Engineering Managers.
You would be a key part of our growth strategy providing, networking with our key target clients and supporting and carrying out parts of our bid-winning and growth strategy.
The ability to travel to client offices and project sites on a flexible basis is essential.
Primary Responsibilities
The role is suitable for an experienced Chartered Engineer and who if not already has ambitions to become a Supervising Panel Engineer. You should be able to demonstrate leadership and the technical knowledge and experience to guide engineering teams in the following areas:
- Coordination of design output.
- Delivery of the design stage outputs of each project within the agreed timescale and budget.
- Ensuring that an adequate Technical, Safety, Environmental and Sustainability review is carried out for each project.
- Undertake inspections of reservoir assets and produce reports on condition.
- Supervise construction work on reservoir assets, including monitoring construction quality, compliance with specifications and Health & Safety performance.
- Ensuring that company/client standard designs and design practices are utilised wherever possible.
- Agreement of the design cost budget and monitoring performance against the budget and providing forecast costs to completion for individual projects.
- Recording, monitoring and controlling design changes in order to maximise cost efficiency.
- Promote buildability and supply chain efficiency in design outputs.
- Contributing to ensuring a safe working environment for all staff.
- Maintaining a positive and solution-oriented approach to work, providing open and honest feedback.
- Being aware of the need to satisfy customer requirements with the aim of enhancing the customers’ perception and satisfaction.

- Is seen by clients as an advocate for their organisation and as a trusted technical advisor.
- Communicates client interests and drivers to the wider business and contributes to business line strategy.
- Proactively offers other services to the clients to meet their specific challenges and requirements.
- Develops and maintains regular customer contacts for expanding product/service across multiple clients.
Commercial Acumen
- Assists in mentoring members of the engineering team in managing budgets, efficient delivery, recognising scope change, managing project risks and implementing mitigation measures.
- Experienced in building up costs for production of engineering deliverables, predominantly under the NEC suite of contracts.
- Knowledge of programme management using Microsoft Project or other suitable software.
- Awareness of the tools used to monitor project performance and produce accurate cost and spend profiles such as Earned Value Analysis to enable support for the project management of commissions.

- Consistently and independently applies specialist knowledge and complies with Binnies’ quality programme relative to assigned tasks.
- Responsible for ensuring compliance with Binnies’ quality programme.
- Consistently provides guidance and direction to others from their project team.
- Supports and actively encourages continuous improvement and change management efforts.
- Provides quality management guidance and assistance to project and engineering managers and wider team and promotes a culture that is conducive to quality.

- Involved in the career planning, recognition, learning and development for a team.
Resource Management
- Involved in incorporating local resource management into the wider consultancy resource management process.
- Highlights resource and skills gaps and recruitment requirements to department leads.

- Is recognised by their team as being a positive role model.
- Operates as a technical specialist within the consultancy group.
- Leads and directs others with effective delegation as necessary.
- Actively uses these skills to build trust and integrity in wider delivery teams.
Educational Attributes
- Bachelor's degree in engineering technology preferred or any other degree, specialised training, or experience, that makes the individual qualified to perform the job responsibilities.
- Holds an industry recognised, chartered professional qualification.
- Qualified as or working towards becoming a Supervising Panel Engineer.
