What do we do?
Paddle offers digital product companies a completely different approach to their payment infrastructure. Instead of assembling and maintaining a complex stack of payments-related apps and services, we’re a Merchant of Record for our customers. That means we take away 100% of the pain of payment fragmentation. It’s faster, safer, cheaper, and, above all, way better.
We’re backed by investors including KKR, FTV Capital, Kindred, Notion, and 83North and serve over 5000 software sellers in 245 territories globally.
The role:
We are seeking an ambitious Engineering Manager to lead our Application Excellence team. This team is part of our wider Platform group. This team aims to provide guidelines and best practices, improve internal developer experience, establish golden paths, identify efficiencies and economies of scale, enable self-serve capabilities, and foster positive liberty through automation and simplification.
This is an opportunity for someone who wants to be part of something challenging and transformative, someone who will play a critical role in driving our success and directly impact our engineer's ways of working and efficiency, having internal developer experience as one of their main drivers.
There are two teams in the Platform group, Application Excellence and SRE. The Platform group are multipliers for the engineering product teams. We prioritise initiatives that deliver impact, take ownership and provide the tooling, allowing the product teams to continue adding value within their specialist domains and spend as little time as possible on operational concerns.
What you'll do:
As the team’s leader, you will facilitate the delivery of initiatives to a high standard from initial concept and planning through to rollout, collaborating with engineers and other internal stakeholders.
Manage and coach the engineers on your team so that they develop personally and professionally and can perform together with impact.
Report to the Director of Engineering, who looks after the Platform group. Create a roadmap for success and ensure the team is working in the right way for maximum (and sustainable) impact.
The Engineering Manager role at Paddle is technical, especially within the Application Excellence group we expect you to contribute code and code reviews every day.
Oversee the technical decisions being made in the department and provide feedback on the platform's technical strategy.
Help to continuously improve engineering efficiency and internal developer experience.
Help to continuously improve the reliability and scalability of Paddle’s high-traffic event-driven system.
Drive improvements to the group's processes and practices with the autonomy to do what you think is right and change what isn’t working.
Work with our other engineering leaders, contributing to the department's engineering principles and practices to build an industry-leading organisation.
We'd love to hear from you if you:
Have at least 5 years of experience as a senior software engineer working on complex, large-scale, cloud-based systems. Experience with Go is a plus.
Have experience working on Platform, Internal Developer Experience or similar teams.
Have at least 2 years of management experience with several direct reports.
You have a strong and demonstrable understanding of what it means to be a high-performing and sustainable engineering team.
Have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and are comfortable leading technical discussions with engineers and non-technical colleagues.
You're excited by and have specific experience building products for internal stakeholders and developers.
You're someone who enjoys getting into the details and understanding the mechanics of anything tech.
You're comfortable working closely with our SRE and Security teams to achieve a better overall platform.
You’re proactive and enjoy taking ownership, but you're also self-aware and always open to improving and pushing yourself to get better.
Our tech stack:
Go for our new services
PHP Laravel and Django for Classic system
Aurora MySQL and PostgreSQL for persistent data storage
Docker in production and local development
AWS ECS Fargate and AWS EKS for our runtime
AWS SQS for our asynchronous message queues
AWS Eventbridge for our event bus
