Job description

About the Role:
We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Microsoft Purview Administrator to join our IT governance and compliance team. In this role, you will serve as a subject matter expert and technical lead for Microsoft Purview’s data governance and compliance solutions. You will be responsible for architecting, maintaining, and optimising our Purview environment, ensuring that critical corporate data is properly classified, protected, and governed. You will also provide guidance to junior team members, collaborate with stakeholders across the organisation, and help shape our data governance strategies in alignment with business objectives and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Strategic Planning & Architecture:
  • Lead the design and optimisation of our Microsoft Purview deployments, including data scanning, classification, labelling, and metadata management configurations.
  • Develop a long-term roadmap for leveraging Purview’s capabilities to enhance data governance, compliance, and information protection across the organisation.
  • Partner with IT architects, security, and compliance teams to ensure that Purview integrates seamlessly with other Microsoft 365 and Azure services.
  • Administration & Maintenance:
    • Oversee the day-to-day administration of Purview, including service health monitoring, troubleshooting complex issues, and coordinating version upgrades.
    • Manage role-based access controls (RBAC), ensuring that all users have the appropriate permissions to fulfill their responsibilities.
    • Continuously refine scanning schedules, policies, workflows, and tags to maintain data accuracy, discoverability, and compliance.
  • Data Governance & Compliance Alignment:
    • Implement and maintain DLP policies, retention labels, records management plans, and other compliance mechanisms within Purview to support regulatory and business requirements (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA, CCPA).
    • Work closely with privacy officers, legal teams, and internal auditors to provide data lineage, audit trails, and evidence of compliance.
    • Guide the development and maintenance of the enterprise data catalog, ensuring it is reliable, comprehensive, and up-to-date.
  • Performance Optimisation & Best Practices:
    • Identify opportunities for automation and efficiency improvements using scripts, APIs, or integration with other data governance and security tools.
    • Develop and enforce Purview best practices, standard operating procedures, and guidelines for data classification, labeling, and asset curation.
    • Conduct regular assessments to ensure optimal performance, proper scaling, and continuous improvement of Purview services.
  • Collaboration & Leadership:
    • Mentor and guide junior administrators and analysts, providing training, knowledge transfer, and leadership to elevate team competencies.
    • Communicate with business units, data stewards, and application owners to understand their needs and translate them into technical Purview solutions.
    • Represent the Purview administration team in cross-functional meetings, strategic planning sessions, and incident response activities.
