The IoT Lab engages with customers of The Hartford to deploy a wide array of sensor technologies that seek to better characterize and mitigate risk. Some examples of sensor technologies that the IoT Lab utilizes are devices that detect the presence of water leaks, wearable technologies that characterize the movement of warehouse and factory workers, and automotive telematics devices to characterize driver behaviors on the road.

The Data Engineering role for the IoT Lab specializes in all stages of the data delivery process from the devices deployed to customers. The individual makes informed decisions about ingestion solutions, data transformation, and data storage that make the data resilient and more powerful to internal consumers. The individual will work with a small team of engineers focused on creating a robust marketplace of IoT and Telematics data for the enterprise.

The individual is expected to have a wide set of skills from both data engineering, and software engineering more generally. The individual should have experience working with a wide range of data formats, and storage solutions. Data ingestion and delivery require the individual to also have experience in web development, specifically with RESTful web services.

Responsibilities

  • Work with a team of engineers to make decisions about data delivery and solve problems related to data when needed.
  • Communicate with data vendors to design and implement data collection methods.
  • Develop autonomous data collection processes in a cloud environment.
  • Design data lake tables that provide data in an understandable format within the context of the larger business.
  • Work with Data Scientists to understand the ways they consume data and design data lakes and APIs to support their models and processes.
  • Write documentation to support development and provide information to downstream consumers of data.
  • Contribute to the development of internal web applications and APIs to serve data and model the IoT Lab’s processes.

Qualifications:

  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship. The company will not support the STEM OPT I-983 Training Plan endorsement for this position.
  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent and 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Python programming (3+ years)
  • Experience with Database and Data Lake systems
  • PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, Dremio, Athena, etc.
  • Experience writing SQL queries
  • Specific Services: Lambda, Glue, S3, RDS
  • Experience with Web/API Development
  • RESTful web services

Nice to have skills:

  • Experience with AWS cloud development is a plus
  • Experience with Tableau is a plus
  • GraphQL is a plus
  • Flask framework is a plus
  • Knowledge of CI/CD pipeline deployment is a plus
  • Experience with Javascript and React Frontend Web Development is a plus

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$97,600 - $146,400
