Job Description:
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
The Tool and Die Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and improving tools, dies, and fixtures used in manufacturing processes. This role requires a high level of expertise in mechanical engineering, precision manufacturing, and materials science to ensure the efficiency, quality, and durability of tools used for stamping, bending/forming, and machining. The Tool and Die Engineer collaborates with production teams to optimize tool designs and troubleshoot issues to meet production demands.
- Design and develop tools, dies, and fixtures for various manufacturing processes, including stamping, bending/forming, and machining.
- Create 3D models and technical drawings using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, CATIA).
- Evaluate tool designs for manufacturability, ease of use, and cost-effectiveness.
Tool and Die Optimization:
- Analyze existing tooling for wear and performance issues; recommend improvements to enhance durability and productivity.
- Implement continuous process improvements to enhance tooling efficiency and to ensure consistent product quality.
- Assist in the development and testing of prototype tools and dies.
- Perform dimensional inspections and functional tests to ensure tools meet design specifications and quality standards.
- Provide technical support to manufacturing teams by diagnosing and resolving tooling issues during production.
- Work with maintenance teams to ensure proper upkeep of tools and dies, including repairs and retooling.
- Collaborate with production, quality control, and design teams to understand requirements and provide engineering solutions.
- Provide training and guidance to operators and technicians on tool usage, setup, and maintenance.
- Manage multiple tooling projects simultaneously, ensuring deadlines and cost targets are met.
- Prepare documentation, reports, and budgets related to tool and die development projects.
Qualifications:
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- Bachelor’s degree: Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in tool and die design and manufacturing, preferably in a related industry (HVAC, automotive, consumer goods, etc.).
- Proficient with CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar).
- Strong understanding of materials, metallurgy, and tooling processes such as stamping, bending/forming, and machining.
- Knowledge of tool design principles, including die design, fixture design, and manufacturing processes.
- Proficiency in GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) and blueprint reading.
- Experience with CNC machining, EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining), and other tool-making technologies.
- Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical and process issues.
- Strong project management, communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification in tool design or engineering (e.g., Tooling Engineer Certification, Six Sigma).
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift and carry tools and components up to 40 lbs.
Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, machinery, and other industrial conditions.
