General Summary:
General Summary
This position reports into the Underwriting Manager for Life and A&H and is responsible for the evaluation and selection of risk (binding via contract) which ensure the profitable acquisition of new policyholders and the continued profitable retention of inforce cases within assigned authority levels and product types.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Support the achievement of sales and premium goals in accordance with underwriting philosophy, product guidelines and state regulations. This requires the incumbent to:
- Partner with internal and external customers in order to increase sales in new or existing accounts by all reasonable means while aligning to department risk management and compliance guidelines
- Make appropriate risk selection based on the facts presented in applications for insurance
- Fully document reasons and thought processes to support case decisions made
- Assist in the analyzing and identifying early and ongoing risk trends
- Develop personal credibility with sales force, key brokers, customers both external and internal customers and field management.
- Support Colonial Life’s commitment to privacy and safeguarding confidential information by accurately verifying applicant’s key individual identifiers.
- Assist in supporting the achievement of specific top-line, bottom-line growth. This requires the incumbent to:
- Develop technical expertise in risk selection
- Develop selection and retention of customers through accurate risk assessment
- Deliver dependable, accurate and timely service and build relationships with all customers, consistent with the company’s commitment to achieving a distinct competitive advantage.
- Process all reinstatement applications and support policy level applications from the queues as needed to support and meet departmental unit goals.
- Identify efficiency improvements to include new and better ways to handle Underwriting tasks through automation and training.
Job Specifications
The following knowledge, skills, behaviors, and attributes are required:

- Strong knowledge of products for which they underwrite
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Ability to navigate and partner/collaborate effectively throughout all departments in Operations

- Demonstrated ability to mentor associate UW’s
- Minimum 2-3 years insurance experience
- Other responsibilities as defined by manager

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.
$45,600.00-$86,200.00
Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not.
