Job Description

We’re recruiting for a Head of Insurance and Investments Tax who will be responsible for the oversight of tax matters relating to Insurance and Investment across the Group. The role is the lead tax business partner for LGRI investments work, and the lead tax business partner for the Corporate Investments business. This includes being the key point of contact for all relevant tax matters within LGRI and CI on all investment and M&A initiatives, and supporting the Head of International, Insurance & Investments Tax on all insurance and reinsurance matters. The role holder is additionally the M&A lead within Tax, leading best practice across the team with respect to corporate M&A.

    What you'll be doing:

    • Leading delivery of advice on Investments (and in particular Direct Investments) made by the Insurance business, including UK and international investment structures designed to meet SII requirements. This will include working with the International Senior Tax Manager – US to understand and manage the US tax profile of insurance entity investments, including understanding and mitigating exposures and risks, such as PE risks.
    • Working with the Head of International, Insurance & Investments Tax, providing support on (re)insurance transactions which includes the review of (re)insurance agreements, assessing the tax implications of collateral structures, determining potential tax impacts on recapture and termination planning.  Dealing with any tax related matters arising on (re)insurance transactions.
    • Acting as lead tax business partner to the Corporate Investments division, taking responsibility for delivery of all tax advice to the division. This will include co-ordinating specialist tax advice from across the team (e.g. funds, VAT, employment taxes)
    • Acting as the M&A lead within Tax, leading best practice across the team with respect to tax matters and providing expert input as required into corporate M&A undertaken across the team.
    • Responsible for ensuring corporate tax compliance across the Insurance and Corporate Investments entities, including subsidiary investment structures.
    • Responsible for the delivery of timely and accurate tax provisioning for the Insurance and Corporate Investments entities, including subsidiary investment structures, as part of the L&G year end reporting processes.
    • Maintaining good technical knowledge of insurance tax issues. Preparing representations and responses to consultations on prospective changes on behalf of L&G for HMRC/HMT and industry bodies to ensure the Group’s issues and needs are represented. Leading work on assessing impact of legislation changes and other tax developments, communication to stakeholders, developing strategies to adopt in the light of changes.
    • Developing and ensurigne that appropriate risk management controls and procedures are in place. Identify and evaluate key tax risks and ensure these are reported and managed.  

     

    Qualifications

    Who we're looking for:

    • Qualified Accountant, or with sufficient experience of financial accounting to maintain up-to-date professional knowledge.
    • Knowledge of UK Taxes Acts covering corporation tax, income tax, VAT and stamp duty to the extent that they apply to the companies in the group for which tax responsibility held.
    • Knowledge of the insurance tax regime, tax aspects of Solvency II and working knowledge of IFRS.
    • Ability to communicate complex technical issues in a clear, simple manner to a wide audience and to solve complex problems at short notice and under stressed situations.
    • Ability to review for trends, anticipate problems/omissions and consider potential ways to mitigate them.
    • Building and developing strong relationships with staff, peers and other contacts within the business and with external stakeholders including HMRC.
    • Prioritisation, planning and organisation of multi task/person assignments.
    • Practice effective delegation: clear explanations, establish capabilities, use as an opportunity to develop, monitor progress and provide constructive feedback.
