Job description

The part-time Entrepreneur-in-Residence (EIR) program is designed to bring successful entrepreneurs to Carnegie Mellon University’s (CMU) campuses to mentor and help CMU generated startup companies become successful. In addition to working with a portfolio of startups, the EIR would be looking for opportunities to start their own companies based on CMU ideas and IP. The EIR would work with the Swartz Center for Entrepreneurship and other CMU research centers/institutes/departments for a period of 6 months to 2 years.

With a preference for CMU alumni, the EIR program would recruit successful entrepreneurs who are in transition. Typically, this transition would mean that they have recently sold or left their successful startup and are considering their career options for the future.

EIRs will be expected to be gateways to domain networks that will increase the probability of success at CMU generated startups. This includes access to capital, access to customers and access to talent for team building.

In addition to mentoring a portfolio of CMU generated startups and looking for their own startup opportunities, the EIRs would potentially:

- Teach innovation and entrepreneurship courses as Adjunct Professors
- Lead workshops and seminars in their areas of expertise
- Attend and recruit attendees (e.g. investors) for CMU and Swartz Center events and showcases
- Be housed in/consult with the Swartz Center’s Incubator – Project Olympus
- Meet Bi-Weekly with the Swartz Center team, CMU Research Centers/Institutes and other EIRs

The successful candidate will have considerable experience creating and leading innovative business ventures. S/he will have demonstrated knowledge of and experience in early stage development and funding of companies, a history of building and maintaining critical relationships in the business and private capital sectors as well as a strong desire to develop and mentor entrepreneurs.

Minimum Requirements:
- Co-founder of one or more investor backed startup(s)
- C-Suite experience in investor backed startup(s)
- Proven track record for creating high growth startup(s)
- Proven network with VC, Angel and strategic investors
- Proven network with domain specific talent acquisition
- Proven network with domain specific customer acquisition
- Ten or more years of direct startup experience
