Job Summary
Position involves providing expert accounting services to support development and execution of regulatory strategy across the AEP system. Includes managing regulatory accounting efforts to support operating company regulatory activities. Position requires interaction and communication with various parties to regulatory proceedings, including the presentation of written and oral testimony before various regulatory commissions. At conclusion of regulatory proceedings, position requires providing accounting instructions to other accounting departments. On an ongoing basis, position involves keeping accounting management informed regarding regulatory activities. On a periodic basis, position includes leading or participating in special regulatory-related projects including multi-company topics and transactions. This position is highly collaborative with operating company representatives, regulatory services personnel and legal department to support successful regulatory outcomes.
Job Description
Work Designation – remote, preferably in these states in AEP’s service territory: OH, WV, VA, KY, TN, IN, MI, OK, TX, LA, AR. Other states and locales may be considered based on payroll, tax and benefits.
Based on education, experience and interview, this opportunity will be filled commensurately at either job title. For this posting, minimum requirements are stated at the lower grade. Increased expectations are at the higher grade.
Accounting Sr. Manager (grade 10)
Regulatory Accounting Case Manager (grade 9)
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Provide Expert Accounting Services to Support Development and Execution of Regulatory Strategy
Associated Tasks:
- Manage regulatory accounting aspects of regulatory filings before various commissions, including the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission
- Provide accounting testimony before regulatory commissions including the sponsoring of accounting exhibits and schedules contained in the filing requirements as defined by individual commissions
- Manage the preparation and review of responses to interrogatories during discovery and rebuttal phases of proceedings
- Support accounting considerations related to Federal Energy Regulatory Commission jurisdictional recovery mechanisms
- Analyze and research accounting transactions, including other utilities' filings
- Inform management of the accounting implications related to certain regulatory activities
- Monitor proceedings and activity at state regulatory commissions and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, including AEP companies and peer companies.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Inform Accounting Management About Regulatory Activities & Provide Accounting Instructions Related to Regulatory Proceedings
Associated Tasks:
- Monitor regulatory activities for disclosure requirements and accounting implications
- Research commission decisions
- Research Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, including Accounting Standards Codification 980, Regulated Operations.
- Research Federal Energy Regulatory Commission accounting rules
- Issue accounting memos, including accounting instructions and disclosure considerations
- Draft and review regulatory disclosures for SEC Form 10K/10Q, GAAP and FERC Reporting
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Lead or participate in special regulatory accounting-related projects, including multi-company topics and transactions
Associated Tasks:
- Support operating company recovery strategy and decision-making through accounting analysis
- Coordinate with subject matter experts to determine potential accounting implications for AEP companies
- Research accounting for similar transactions by peer companies or by AEP companies in prior periods
- Present information and materials to operating companies and regulatory departments
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or other Business-Related Degree
Experience: Minimum 6 years of general accounting experience or 4 years directly related to regulatory accounting or other regulatory activities
Licenses/Certifications: CPA preferred
ADDITIONAL EXPECTATIONS:
- Some travel required
- Overtime expected at times during the processing of cases
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Experience in leveraging technology to support completion of deliverables.
INITIAL POSITION / BASE SALARY FUNDING: ($110,656 - $168,954). In addition to base salary, AEP offers competitive Total Rewards including: discretionary annual and long-term incentives, 401(k), pension, health insurance, vacation, educational assistance, etc.

Compensation Range:
$129,963.00-168,952.00 USD
Candidates will be considered based on their qualifications and the candidate’s ability to work from an approved work location. Although the location is flexible, AEP does not have a presence in all states and localities. AEP will consider qualified candidates who are willing to relocate to an approved work location, at the candidate’s expense, provided the relocation can be completed within a timeframe that meets AEP’s staffing needs.
