As the preeminent international service organization of the United States, the Peace Corps sends Americans with a passion for service abroad to work with communities and create lasting change. Volunteers develop sustainable solutions to address challenges in Education, Health, Economic Development, Agriculture, Environment and Youth Development. Through their Peace Corps experiences, Volunteers gain a unique cultural understanding and a lifelong commitment to service that positions them to succeed in today's global economy. Since President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps in 1961, more than 240,000 Americans of all ages have served in 142 countries worldwide.
R_Ignite NPC in South Africa has requested the support of Peace Corps Response Volunteers (PCRVs) to serve as English Education Specialists. R_Ignite has identified lack of English proficiency in both teachers and children as a huge challenge in rural schools, and local teachers will benefit from support to adopt different teaching methods and unique skills that are currently lacking to support English learning for children in their early school years.
The PCRVs will provide support to teachers and children and help them to improve their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in English and prepare joint lesson plans and contribute to a fun and innovative teaching and learning experience for teachers and children. Because English is not a home language in Viedgesville, the PCRVs will also provide support by offering tutoring lessons to small groups to build confidence of students in communicating in English.
Candidates selected for this position will be arriving in South Africa together as a group, so while the departure dates for the whole group could change, dates cannot be changed for individual candidates.
