Job description

This is a remote position.

Are you ready to shape the future of payments in South Africa? Join a global powerhouse in mobile-first payment solutions, trusted by some of the world’s biggest brands—Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Netflix, Spotify, and more. This company isn’t just about transactions; it’s about unlocking access to billions of consumers who don’t use credit cards, enabling them to participate in the digital economy. With a network of over 250 local payment methods covering 7 billion accounts across 65 countries, and processing over $9 billion annually, this is where cutting-edge technology meets real-world impact.

The Role:

As the Business Development Director, you won’t just be following a playbook—you’ll be writing it. You’ll own the payment strategy for South Africa, driving innovation and growth by identifying, building, and nurturing partnerships with local players. This role isn’t for the faint-hearted; it’s for someone who thrives on building meaningful connections and creating strategies that lead to tangible results.

You’ll be the face of the company’s South African expansion, working with mobile network operators, eWallet services, banks, and payment service providers (PSPs). Your work will ensure these partners are seamlessly integrated into our payment network, helping millions of consumers access digital services with ease. Plus, you’ll play a crucial role in supporting our global team by expanding key merchant relationships across the region.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Building Strategic Partnerships: You’ll be the driving force behind identifying and onboarding new partners in the South African payments landscape, from eWallets to mobile carriers and beyond. You’ll negotiate deals, optimize pricing, and collaborate on marketing strategies that push the boundaries.
  • Championing Partner Success: You’re not just here to close deals—you’re here to make sure they thrive. You’ll work closely with partners to solve problems, overcome operational challenges, and ensure they’re fully integrated and compliant with our ethical and regulatory standards.
  • Leading the Local Payments Strategy: With your deep understanding of the payments ecosystem, you’ll develop and execute strategies that position the company as a leader in the local market, while also keeping an eye on the broader African region.
  • Regulatory Insight & Influence: You’ll stay ahead of the game, navigating complex licensing, banking, and settlement regulations, leading conversations with central banks, and working with payment authorities to ensure seamless operations.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: You’ll work with internal teams across product, sales, legal, and finance to bring projects from concept to execution, making sure our partners are integrated smoothly and contracts are closed without a hitch.
  • Be the Face of the Brand: You’ll represent the company at the highest level, building rapport with decision-makers and positioning the business as their go-to payment partner in South Africa.

Requirements

Who You Are:

  • A Bold Self-Starter: You don’t wait for opportunities; you create them. You’re passionate about building meaningful relationships and aren’t afraid to take risks to drive growth.
  • A Payments Visionary: Experience in payments, telco, eCommerce, or FinTech will give you the edge. If you’ve worked with mobile payments or local payment methods before, that’s a strong plus.
  • An Analytical Powerhouse: You combine data-driven decision-making with out-of-the-box thinking, ensuring every strategy you execute is grounded in insight but unafraid to push boundaries.

What You’ll Bring:

  • A degree or diploma in business, sales, marketing, or a related field.
  • At least 7 years of experience in business development, project management, or product development, with a solid 5 years in the payments, remittance, or aggregation sectors.
  • Exceptional communication skills in English. Additional languages? That’s a major advantage.
