BACKGROUND:

The National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) is the leading national voice for dignity, respect, and recognition for domestic workers in the United States. NDWA was founded in 2007 by organizers and worker leaders in six cities representing nannies, house cleaners, and care workers, and now represents an alliance of more than 76 organizations across 22 states and 395,000 domestic workers nationally.

We envision a society where domestic work is valued as essential to our collective well-being, domestic workers are leaders in shaping the care sector, and domestic work jobs are good, economically secure jobs.

For over 15 years, we’ve worked to advance our mission by making domestic work visible. We’ve worked to pass policies that enable rights and higher wages for domestic workers across the country, changed public awareness and opinion about the dignity and value of care work, and built the capacity and leadership of domestic workers to organize and advocate for their rights.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Organizer for “We Dream in Black” North Carolina will play a key role in advancing our efforts to build power and amplify the voices of Black domestic and care workers across the state. This position is focused on expanding membership and deepening our presence in key cities like Charlotte, Durham, Raleigh, Greensboro, and Fayetteville, with potential for launching new organizing sites. The Organizer will drive community outreach and leadership development, equipping Black women workers to take on leadership roles within our movement.

Reporting to the NC Organizing Director, the Organizer will work closely with a dynamic team, including staff in North Carolina and the broader We Dream in Black network. The Organizer will also help cultivate strategic partnerships to support policy victories and grow a sustainable movement for Black women workers. Ultimately, this role will strengthen our collective capacity to fight for a just economy and democracy that works for Black communities. Through organizing, leadership development, and collaboration, the Organizer will ensure Black domestic workers are positioned to lead and win systemic change.

PRIMARY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Base building - 60%

  • Manage an ongoing outreach plan for recruiting new members and work with the We Dream in Black outreach membership to canvas in the local community, outreach at events, and worksites.
  • Conduct regular phone follow-ups, coordinate member-led group phone banking sessions for post-outreach follow-up with new contacts and event turnout with general membership.
  • Identify workers who show potential for deep engagement and work with Lead Organizers to implement leadership development activities.
  • Coordinate chapter’s outreach & recruitment system, co-facilitate monthly meetings, and other membership activities.
  • Conduct membership recruitment presentations, support workers who want to join as NDWA members to register online and make dues payments, and consistently involve workers and supporters in the organization and increase their commitment.
  • Build and cultivate new relationships with community institutions and partners to increase the effectiveness of outreach tactics.
  • Support managing digital outreach, digital communications, outreach data, and event data with our current database systems.
  • Consistently track field work and interactions with new worker contacts as well as with members.
  • Track individual progress and contribute to overall chapter goals for recruitment, engagement, and leadership development.

Program and campaign implementation - 40%

  • Work with the North Carolina Organizing Director and Lead Organizers to plan for monthly We Dream in Black meetings, membership programming, and coordinate membership participation in local and national We Dream in Black gatherings and initiatives.
  • Coordinate and activate membership into campaign activities and ensure broad participation from membership in ongoing campaign plans.
  • Support overall team efforts to execute outreach for local campaigns, other local worker engagement, and local and national rapid response mobilizations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Highly motivated individual with a passion for engaging communities
  • Ability to work some nights and weekends
  • 2-3 years organizing experience (either paid or volunteer)
  • Strong relational skills and ability to connect, engage, and inspire community members
  • Strong and effective communicator
  • Intermediate computer skills: (i.e., PowerPoint, Google Suite)
  • Demonstrated leadership experience
  • Hard-working and self-disciplined
  • Ability to work well with a team and motivate others to take action
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • Ability to work well under pressure and manage time efficiently
  • Knowledge of issues affecting Black domestic workers nationally and locally
  • Position requires travel throughout North Carolina state which will require reliable transportation and occasional national travel
  • Position requires some evening and some weekend work as needed.
