State Fund's Subrogation Department is seeking a motivated Graduate Legal Assistant (GLA) to join an elite legal team in handling and litigating workers' compensation subrogation cases. The Graduate Legal Assistant classification is primarily designed to afford law school graduates, not yet licensed by the California State Bar Association, an introduction to the practice of law. Only the most qualified candidates will be contacted for an interview.
Position may be filled at one of the following State Fund locations: Glendale, Pleasanton, Sacramento, or Santa Ana.
Under the direction and supervision of an Assistant Chief Counsel, the GLA is expected to, but not limited to the following:
• Conduct legal research related to drafting of legal documents and memorandum with regard to Workers' Compensation Subrogation matters.
• Assist with legal project work such as gathering data and compiling research.
• Conduct research related to subrogation, worker’s compensation, and civil causes of action.
• Knowledge and Use of Legal Software (Lexis), Microsoft Office and Outlook, Excel, and Power Point.
• Create legal documents, such as filings, trial preparation materials and mediation briefs in state and federal court and Worker’s Compensation Appeals Board.
• Draft communication to clients, opposing counsel, insurance carriers, other agencies and vendors.
• Draft internal correspondence or reports
• Assist with discovery including propounding and responding to written discovery, reviewing records, preparing for depositions and summarizing deposition transcripts and written discovery responses.
• Assist attorneys with case management and handling, including preparing internal reports and reviews and preparation for mediations/settlement conferences and trial preparation.
• Process subpoenas, including all tasks involved with the review, selection of documents and completion for service.
