Summary

The Staff Instructional Designer (ID) works to identify skills, knowledge, and information gaps of a targeted audience and, based on instructional theory and best practices, selects or creates learning experiences that close this gap.

Job details

The ID will be part of a large curriculum development team responsible for the design and development of technical training for a maritime manufacturer. Candidate will be required to develop training materials from engineering and technical documentation, and from interviews with subject matter experts (SMEs).

Responsibilities

  • Apply front-end analyses including task analysis, content analysis and evaluation of learner characteristics to propose the most effective learning solutions and topical flow for each training program and audience.
  • Use sound instructional design methods to design and develop learning experiences for self-directed training, eLearning, instructor-led training (in-class and virtual), or performance support solutions that increase employees’ knowledge skills and abilities.
  • Collaborate closely with project managers, training analysts, subject matter experts, and content and media developers to build highly engaging and effective learning experiences.
  • Engage with SMEs to solicit information as required during all phases of the project, and to provide recommendations or feedback where appropriate.
  • Identify opportunities to supplement instructor-led training with blended learning solutions that include game-based, performance support, and eLearning.
  • Synthesize technical and complex ideas and procedures into easy-to-understand training formats for novice learners.
  • Follow a curriculum development framework to ensure consistency and quality in all deliverables.
  • Be adaptable and flexible in managing multiple priorities while meeting deadlines.
  • Share frequent status updates with internal team members.
  • Collaborate with and accept feedback and coaching from more experienced IDs to achieve desired results.

Minimum Qualifications

  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Systems Design or related discipline.
  • 1 year of experience designing and developing technical training for employees in a maritime manufacturing setting.
  • 5 years of experience designing, developing, and delivering training programs and curricula.
  • Demonstrate experience storyboarding eLearning courses, writing video scripts, designing and developing instructor-led training, writing assessment questions for written and performance-based examinations, and creating performance support tools such as job aids and interactive PDFs.
  • Demonstrate experience designing and developing examinations, quizzes, knowledge checks, and performance-based assessments to ensure learner mastery of the subject matter.
  • Integrate reviewer feedback into course design.
  • Use enthusiasm, drive, and creativity to apply instructional strategies to course design and development.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office products.
  • Have a working knowledge of SharePoint and in managing version control of files and documents.
  • Have a portfolio of your work ready to share.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Instructional Design/Instructional Technology, Education, or Adult Learning.
  • Experience designing, developing, and delivering technical training programs and curricula in a manufacturing setting, including in-depth experience with eLearning.
  • Experience developing training using an AGILE approach.
  • Knowledge of US Navy submarine structural components and systems.
  • Ability to read various technical drawings, specifications, and other work package documentation.
  • Exceptional ability to earn trust of subject matter experts and stakeholders.
  • Self-starter with outstanding organization and execution of task-based skills.
  • Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication abilities and grammar skills

Additional Information

  • The selected candidate will design training for one or more trade departments: electrical, pipefitting, pipe welding, structural welding, steel processing and fabrication, inside and outside machinist, rigging, painting and carpentry.
