Job description

About Skylight

Skylight is a digital consultancy using design and technology to help government agencies deliver better public services.

We’re at the forefront of a civic movement to reinvent how all levels of government serve families, patients, and many others in today's digital world.

If you want to play a part in driving this critical movement forward, we’d love for you to join our growing team of public interest technologists.

The work we do matters.

About the job

Since launching several years ago, our team has grown rapidly. We find ourselves in an exciting position to further deepen our partnerships within the government contracting space, to continue to attract and retain amazing teammates, and to scale our capacity to make an even bigger difference in the world.

Currently, our company is organized into three main groups: Executive Office (sets and operationalizes the strategic direction of the company), Human Services (focused on clients such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), and Defense Services (focused on clients such as the U.S. Air Force).

As Skylight’s Chief Financial Officer, you’ll report directly to the Chief Operating Officer and be responsible for guiding and developing the company’s financial well-being. You’ll play a pivotal role in our executive leadership team, providing overall financial strategy, management, reporting, and operational direction.

What you’ll do
  • Strategic financial leadership: Formulate and implement the company’s financial strategy, participate in strategic planning, act as an advisor to the executive team, and play a key role in mergers and acquisitions
  • Financial planning and reporting: Develop, manage, and oversee the annual budget process, prepare accurate and timely financial statements, and conduct financial analysis and performance monitoring
  • Compliance and risk management: Ensure adherence to government regulations (e.g., FAR, DCAA), coordinate audits, manage financial risks, and maintain internal controls
  • Cost management and pricing: Implement cost accounting practices for government contracts, develop pricing strategies, manage wrap rates, and identify and implement cost-saving measures
  • Cash flow and expense management: Monitor and manage cash flow, develop financial forecasts and projections, oversee expense management, and manage payroll and accounts payable processes
  • Tax, investment, and debt management: Oversee tax planning and compliance, manage investment portfolios, develop capital-raising strategies, and manage debt relationships
  • Team development and training: Assemble, manage, and develop the finance and accounting team, including providing financial training and support to other organizations
  • Vendor and procurement oversight: Oversee financial relationships with vendors and contractors, ensure procurement process oversight, and negotiate payment terms
  • Financial systems and technology: Oversee the implementation, management, and upgrading of financial systems and technologies to streamline processes and improve accuracy
  • Stakeholder communication and ethical standards: Communicate financial performance and strategy to stakeholders, uphold ethical standards in financial reporting, and serve as the primary financial liaison with government agencies
What we're looking for
Minimum qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or related field; Master’s degree (e.g., MBA) or relevant certifications (e.g., CPA, CMA) preferred
  • Extensive experience in financial management, with at least 10–15 years in financial leadership roles in a government contractor professional services environment
  • Excellent general management and leadership skills
  • Outstanding organizational skills, including attention to detail
  • Excellent people management skills
  • Experience building and managing high-performing teams
  • Relentless commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Collaborative, supportive leadership style
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills
  • Strong business acumen
  • Superb written and oral communication skills
  • Relentless commitment to excellence and quality in everything we do
  • Strong understanding of business functions such as people ops, marketing, business development, etc.
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and derive actionable insights from financial, operational, and performance data
  • Ability to serve as a coach/mentor to other leaders and managers
  • Passionate about creating better public outcomes through great government services
  • A mindset and work approach that aligns with our core values
  • Ability to travel for work from time to time
Nice-to-have qualifications
  • Prior experience working in the civic tech space
  • Experience working in a remote-team environment

Don’t meet 100% of the criteria but think you can do the job? We’d love to chat anyway! We’re on a mission to build diverse teams, and studies have shown that women and marginalized folks are less likely to apply to jobs if they don’t check every box.
