Position Summary:

The Supervisor of Workers' Compensation Utilization Review is responsible for overseeing and managing a team of Utilization Review Specialists. This role ensures the efficient and effective review of medical treatment requests for injured workers, adherence to evidence-based guidelines, and compliance with state-specific workers' compensation regulations. The Supervisor plays a crucial role in maintaining high-quality URAC standards, meeting department goals, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Possess excellent communication and organizational skills to interface with the client, claimants, and staff. Working well independently and setting priorities and working independently is essential.

 

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Team Leadership and Management
  • Assure the performance standards of the team through continued training, coaching, and regular performance evaluations.
  • Monitor staff work assignments and make appropriate adjustments based on staffing levels.
  • Provide coaching and training to improve the productivity of staff members within the team.
  • Complete annual reviews for direct reports with Manager input.
  • Create and support an environment that fosters teamwork, cooperation, respect, and diversity.

 

Operational Oversight

• Provide clinical, technical, and operational support and direction, including organization and monitoring of utilization review services.

• Assist with the daily operations of licensed and non-licensed professionals.

• Develop and oversee the implementation of utilization review practices and procedures with assigned team members.

• Ensure complete compliance with TRISTAR's policies and procedures.

• Participate in management team and supervisory meetings.

 

Quality Assurance and Compliance

• Dedicate 20% of total time to Quality Assurance meetings and URAC activities.

• Review quality audits and share results timely with associates, providing necessary education and training to improve performance.

• Ensure staff compliance with URAC and Utilization Review requirements and mandated regulatory requirements.

 • Utilize jurisdictional knowledge of regulatory rules, statutes, and procedures to ensure compliance in assigned jurisdictions.

 

Training and Development

• Assist in training new staff and provide ongoing training to ensure staff expertise.

• Work collaboratively with the Manager and identified leadership to develop and implement performance measures.

• Monitor associates placed on performance improvement plans.

 

Communication and Client Relations

• Represent the company professionally to both internal and external customers and clients.

• Accurately answer questions regarding Utilization Review for clients, injured workers, and providers.

• Maintain communication among staff members in the department and communicate with the management team.

• Participate in client stewardship activities.

Qualifications

Education

  • Diploma, Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Master’s level (or higher) in a Nursing, Health or Human Services field or equivalent related experience preferred
  • Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and or Certified Case Manager (CCM) license required
  • CCM, CMCN, CPHUR, CPDM,  COHN or CDMS certification preferred

 

Experience:

  • Three or more years of diverse clinical experience in acute care
  • Two or more years of medical case management or managed care experience, Worker’s Compensation background preferred
  • Knowledge of utilization management, quality improvement, discharge planning, and or cost management. 
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables. 
  • Possess planning, organizing, conflict resolution, negotiating and interpersonal skills. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to set priorities and work independently is essential
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Power Point

Qualifications and Requirements:

Education and Licensure:

• Active, unrestricted RN licensure from the United States and in the state of hire, or active, compact multistate unrestricted RN license as defined by the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC)

• Diploma, Associate, or bachelor’s degree preferred.

 

Certifications:

• CCM, CPHM, CMCN, or CDMS certification preferred.

 

Experience:

• Two years of Supervisory or Management experience

• Managed Care background in Worker's Compensation, Group Health, and/or Wellness preferred.

 

Knowledge and Skills:

• Proficiency in utilization management, quality improvement, discharge planning, and cost management

• Understanding of plan benefits information and authorization processes

• Familiarity with Group Health, Wellness, and/or Worker's Compensation law and practices

• Strong problem-solving abilities and capacity to handle various variables in complex situations.

• Ability to set priorities and work independently.
