Job description

The opportunity

As a Senior Business Analyst, you are passionate about business analysis, implementation, support and improvements of data systems. You will provide analysis support to both “run-the-shop” and “evolve data and analytics capabilities” for the Member Services Group that supports Ontario Teachers Pension Plan members and pensioners. 

This role will play a key part in underlying all initiative delivery. Your responsibility is to understand, document and facilitate agreement on requirements, approaches, specifications and decision variables that enable the delivery of appropriate solutions to achieve business and project goals. The Senior Business Analyst will elicit client needs and ensure requirements traceability as part of delivering applications and information solutions for internal business partners.

Who you'll work with

In this dynamic role, collaboration will be the key to your success as you work with other functional teams including: Product & Delivery, Agile teams, Application Management, Project Management, Solution & Quality Engineering, external vendor consultants on a dynamic portfolio of initiatives that encompasses production support, ad-hoc requests, small & medium improvements and multi-year projects. You will work in Project or Product\Service teams to deliver business value through defined outcomes. You will provide business analysis support through the Insights & Data Agile Service team to Member Services business teams in:  AFTA (Actuarial Fund and Tax Administration; Digital Member Experience & Innovation, Employer Relations and Member Information Management (education employers in Ontario);  Strategic Planning and Business Insights as well as Risk Management, Quality Assurance, Training and Coaching. 

What you'll do
  • Engages business clients to elicit business requirements and understand objectives and works with business and solution teams to ensure that solutions being delivered meet their business intent and provide business value

  • Conceives, proposes and facilitates the selection of viable functional solution alternatives

  • Produces business analysis related documentation, functional specifications, current and future state processes and workflows, and solution specifications to a high-quality standard

  • Identifies internal and external data sources and delivers data mapping specifications and or data workspaces to support applications and reports

  • Works with Data Vendor Manager and business partners, when needed, to assess data costs and facilitate acquisition of new external vendor content 

  • Documents the flow and transformation of data from suppliers through data repositories/warehouses and to end user datamarts/applications

  • Provides input and influences Solution design to achieve business outcomes including detailed profiling to inform new data models whilst understanding the strategic direction of MS curated data

  • Understands and leverages physical data models including relational models, cubes, dimensions, facts and measures for use in reports and analytics

  • Provides effective business context, solution knowledge, artifact transfer to Support teams as part of progressing initiatives to Production

  • Demonstrates requirements traceability and, oversees User Acceptance phase of initiatives (define strategy, plan, approve test cases, lead all aspects of execution). Works with Business, Product Owner, Solution Engineering and QA to ensure built solutions meet stated requirements

  • Works with senior management across partner teams to define initiative scope on new projects/product developments

  • Leads in the initiation and planning of new projects including facilitating the definition of objectives, scope, BA approach and WBS as well as provides work estimates

  • Works with Development and QA teams to inform the test strategy and develops test plans and ensure they understand the business requirements and can test solutions appropriately

  • Works across Service and Product teams and strategizes with PMs and SDM/POs to identify interdependencies and establish delivery plans

  • Leads discussions and meetings to achieve desired outcomes with a variety of technical and business audiences (including senior partners).

  • Partners with Product Owners/Service Request Managers to delivery business value messaging to partners and sponsors

  • Works with Agile delivery teams to map user stories and define user acceptance criteria for work packages

  • Contributes to the operation and improvement of the delivery team

  • Exercises appropriate judgment in identifying and calling out risks and issues

  • Coaches and develops other more junior Bas or other delivery team members

  • Mentors BAs in the team through feedback, documents review, role modelling, training and experience sharing

What you'll need
  • Minimum 7 years’ experience in one or more of the following roles: Senior Business Analyst or Business Consultant or BSA or Senior Data Analyst. Nice to have: Capital Markets experience.

  • Extensive practical experience (such as lead BA) and expert knowledge of business analysis methodologies, processes, tools, practices in Kanban, Scrum and waterfall

  • University degree or equivalent experience (Business/Finance, Financial Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering)

  • Asset would be one or more of:  CBAP; Process improvement methodology accreditation, CFA, Certified Enterprise Data Professional

  • Experience in planning and leading UAT

  • Ability to prioritize, coordinate and complete tasks to meet target timelines

  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment, collaborating effectively with business, delivery and technology partners

  • Ability to influence and communicate with impact to overall delivery strategy and solution design/approach

  • Experience collaborating with product-oriented delivery and technology teams to deliver solutions that take on business problems and meet business requirements

  • Demonstrable understanding of techniques and tools pertaining to the planning, analysis, design, development, testing, deployment and maintenance of technology solutions

  • Robust understanding of waterfall project management delivery methodologies and Agile processes and the difference between needs and wants

  • Proactive customer focus

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Experience working on and/or building curated data sets

  • Experience with the following technologies is an asset:  MS SQL, AS400/DB2, PowerBI, Excel Power Pivot, Python, Salesforce, PureCloud, Adobe, Camunda, Talend, SAS, Collibra and JIRA
