Who will you be working with?
As an Assistant Operator with our Rail Flaw Detection (RFD) Team, you will work as part of a two-person crew to inspect America's rail infrastructure. The RFD team inspects the steel tracks for internal defects not usually found by visual examination. This is a critical role in keeping our infrastructure safe by reducing the number of derailments caused by track defects.
How will you make a difference?
As a Rail Flaw Detection Group member, you will be responsible for the safe operation and care of Rail Inspection vehicles, both on and off track. You will assist the Chief Operator in providing a quality test by adjusting track inspection speeds, active communication about upcoming track features, and flagging the defects as required by the host railroad. You will be the primary operator to repair the ultrasonic testing carriage and components. You will ensure the truck is ready for the next day of testing with light cleaning, refilling of water tanks, and ensuring the test components are in working order.
What do we want to know about you?
    • Minimum high school diploma or GED.
    • One or more years of professional driver experience is preferred.
    • Good driving habits and experience with larger trucks.
    • Some mechanical ability/knowledge of basic hand tools.
    • General computer skills, Knowledge of Office 365 and Microsoft Windows.
    • Willing to be away from home for an extended period.
    • Previous railroad experience is a plus.
    • Must be a team player and willing to do what it takes to make the customer happy in a safe and ethical manner.
What will your typical day look like?
    • Extensive travel within the continental United States. This "Road Warrior" position requires extensive travel (up to several months on the road at a time).
    • Conduct DOT Vehicle Inspection Checks before and after each trip.
    • Drive Rail Inspection Vehicles on the road and on the rail in support of rail flaw detection activities.
    • Maintains and submits accurate electronic driver logs, fuel reports, and any other required documentation.
    • Assists the Chief Operator during testing activities.
    • Maintain the Rail Inspection Vehicle's test carriage.
    • Marks defective rails with permanent marking pens, spray paint, and flagging tape.
    • Light housekeeping duties to keep a clean work environment.
    • Partners with the Chief Operator to maintain 5S
    • Grease, lube, and tighten bolts, and repair or have repaired defective parts on the ultrasonic testing carriage as necessary – any adjustments or repairs would be under the supervision of the Chief Operator.
    • Maintains accurate business expense records.
    • Maintains the vehicle's inventory by submitting monthly inventory and maintenance reports following specified guidelines.
What about the physical demands of the job?
Work is primarily light duty and in an enclosed, climate-controlled vehicle, but requires the ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 20 pounds regularly. This position requires the ability to sit, stand, and walk unassisted. Requires the use of hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is required to talk and hear. Normal, correctable vision is required. When operating the Rail Inspection Vehicle, you must be willing to work in all weather conditions and can travel with very little notice. You must be willing and able to perform mechanical/technical work on fleet vehicles. You must be able to lift more than 50 lbs. and stand for long periods. This position requires using PPE to include, but not limited to, Safety Glasses, Hard Hats, Safety Vests, Leather Gloves, and Safety Toe Boots (made of leather, 6" + ankle, lace up, with a defined heel).
You may also be asked to perform other duties outside of your function or trade, for which adequate training will be provided if necessary.
