Your missions

The Hired Guns are seeking a versatile Senior Editor with digital and podcast experience to join a dynamic editorial team at a non-profit that’s transforming the American education system through solutions-based journalism.

Comp range: hourly equivalent of $95,000 to $120,000 annual base

  • Work at a well-funded and very stable foundation: this non-profit has deep pockets and outstanding leadership
  • Launch a new podcast series and have ample room to make this role your own—creativity is the name of the game here
  • Enjoy a great work-life balance in a fully remote role at a mission-driven org—what’s not to love?

Note, this is a full-time 18-month contract position based remotely anywhere in the United States with the possibility of staying on after 18 months (they won’t let good talent leave!)

The Nitty Gritty

The backstory on the company and why they need to hire you!

This influential foundation/media site is at the forefront of a movement to transform American education via solutions-based journalism—by telling stories of what’s working in schools, and what's not. To deliver on this mission, they’re looking for a versatile Senior Editor—with podcast experience—to join a passionate editorial team reporting, writing, and editing stories and podcasts about transformative, positive change in pre-K to 12 education.

As Senior Editor, Digital & Podcast, you’ll play a critical role in a range of editorial disciplines such as spearheading a new podcast beat; conceiving of and pitching new stories; reporting, including on-the-ground reporting and online research; writing and editing across a wide range of formats including short- and long-form feature articles, social media posts, and video scripts; and story assigning. Versatility is key in this role, because your days will never look the same (which, let’s be honest, is super refreshing).

This role partners closely with creative team members. You’ll constantly be brainstorming ways to enhance stories and assigning and editing other writers and external contributors as needed. (If you have a team of freelancers you want to bring with you, they’re open to that).

Why You?

How you'll know if you're a fit…

Most importantly, we’re looking for a total creative with excellent journalistic skills; an education in journalism is preferred. You must have 5+ years of writing, assigning, and editing experience for a significant digital publication, with a track record of writing or editing high-performing content for a broad audience. Your primary focus will be launching a podcast, so you must have podcast experience—and we’re talking a series, not just one episode.

A basic understanding of analytics tools, experience with social media platforms (X, Facebook, Pinterest, etc.), and facility with Google Workspace (Drive, Docs, Presentation, Sheets, etc.) are essential. Oh, and you’re a really nice human who is excited to be mentored by incredible colleagues and to join a talented editorial team at a mission-driven organization.

The Inside Skinny

Why you should quit your job right now and join this team!

If you’re looking for a role that allows you to live your life outside of work (no late newsroom hours or working on weekends), but then come to work and be a successful Senior Editor for a mission-driven company, then this is the gig for you! (And their benefits package is super-competitive!)
