GEICO is seeking an experienced Engineer with a passion for building high-performance, low maintenance, zero-downtime platforms, and applications. You will help drive our insurance business transformation as we transition from a traditional IT model to a tech organization with engineering excellence as its mission, while co-creating the culture of psychological safety and continuous improvement.
Position Description
The Sr. Staff Engineer reports to the Head of Document Platform under GEICO Platform Engineering organization. This technical leader works with other engineers to innovate and build a unified and modernized document management system that integrates with multiple business applications to serve critical business processes. You will lead the strategy and execution of the technical roadmap of one or multiple sub-areas of the entire document management platform. The ideal candidate has deep technical expertise in large-scale distributed system design and development.
Position Responsibilities
As a Sr. Staff Engineer, you will:
• Focus on one or multiple areas in the document management domain and provide technical leadership to the organization; Develop and execute technical software development strategy for a specific domain.
• Be the focal point of cross-functional product development teams; Coordinate and collaborate with product managers, engineering team members and customers to solve complex problems
• Oversee high-level and low-level designs of one or multiple sub-systems of the new unified document platforms we are building. Be responsible and accountable for the quality, reliability, usability, and performance of the solutions
• Leverage open-source frameworks and embrace the cloud native development paradigm
• Mentor and help coach and strengthen the technical expertise and know-how of our engineering and product community
• Always push for engineering excellence; Influence and educate leadership at all levels; Consistently share best practices and improve processes within and across teams.
• Determine and support resource requirements, evaluate operational processes, measure outcomes to ensure desired results, demonstrate adaptability and sponsor continuous learning
Qualifications
• Fluency and specialization with at least two modern languages such as Java, C++, Python or C# including object-oriented design
• Extensive knowledge and experience of building data intensive large-scale distributed systems with focus on fault-tolerance and throughput.
• Experience building products of micro-services oriented architecture and extensible REST APIs
• Experience building the architecture and design of new and current systems (architecture, design patterns, reliability, and scaling)
• Fluency in DevOps concepts and best practices in CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure as a code
• Experience with application performance monitoring tools and performance assessments
• Experience in Datacenter structure, capabilities, and offerings, including the Azure platform and its native services
• Experience in security protocols and products: understanding of Active Directory, Windows Authentication, SAML, OAuth
• In-depth knowledge of CS data structures and algorithms
• Experience with solving analytical problems with quantitative approaches
• Ability to excel in a fast-paced, startup-like environment
• Knowledge of developer tooling across the software development life cycle (task management, source code, building, deployment, operations, real-time communication)
Experience
• 10+ years of professional software development experience on large-scale distributed systems for high-traffic internet applications or business-critical enterprise systems
• 8+ years of experience with architecture and design
• 5+ years of experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, or another cloud service
• 5+ years of experience in open-source frameworks
Education
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent education or work experience
Annual Salary
$120,000.00 - $261,500.00
The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
