Department Overview

The Staff Compensation Programs unit oversees systemwide staff compensation policy and program design, tools and systems, working closely with compensation and human resource professionals at the ten campuses and five medical centers. We facilitate collection and analysis of internal and external market data for strategic decision support and planning. We ensure that compensation policies and programs comply with applicable legal and regulatory requirements. We also work closely with talent management professionals across the campuses and medical centers to ensure alignment of the university's compensation programs and strategies with recruiting, career development and broader HR strategies.

Position Summary

The Compensation Consultant reports to the Director of Compensation Projects and focuses on enhancing compensation reporting and data integrity. This role involves identifying opportunities and recommending, developing, implementing, and managing projects to achieve desired outcomes. The Compensation Consultant collaborates closely with various university offices, UC locations, stakeholders, and the UC Office of the President. Serving as a HR resource, this position requires an understanding of the compensation field and its impact on reporting and data integrity. Key responsibilities include providing guidance at all organizational levels, leveraging compensation knowledge and technical skills to resolve issues. The role involves frequent interaction with internal and external contacts concerning compensation programs, objectives, and systems. Additionally, the Compensation Consultant develops, implements, maintains, and administers compensation policies, programs, and systems.

Key Responsibilities

50% UCPath: Utilizes comprehensive compensation knowledge to analyze, modify, create, update, review, and validate UCPath requests. Partners with all levels of the organization, including but not limited to other UC locations, UCPath, Labor Relations (LR), and Payroll to ensure timely and accurate submission of requests. Conducts data analysis to evaluate compensation issues and recommends appropriate courses of action. Proposes corrective or alternative solutions to resolve UCPath problems or errors. Generates detailed reports and conducts thorough data integrity reviews to ensure accuracy. Implements quality assurance processes to maintain high standards of data reliability and consistency. Strives to streamline and enhance process efficiency, establishing accountability measures to ensure compliance and continuous improvement within the UCPath system.

25% JDX: Provides comprehensive backup support for JDX, developing and enhancing expertise in JDX operations. Collaborates with multiple location administrators and colleagues to address JDX issues and concerns, ensuring effective communication and resolution of problems. Engages with JDX support to mediate and resolve complex issues that cannot be addressed locally, acting as a liaison between location administrators and JDX support. Assists in the development and maintenance of JDX-related documentation and training materials to support location administrators. Provides assistance on regular reviews of JDX processes to identify opportunities for improvement and efficiency. Works closely with the JDX administrator to ensure the smooth operation of the system and effective issue resolution, contributing to the overall success of JDX initiatives.

20% MARKETPAY: Will provide backup support for MarketPay. Compensation Consultant will learn and develop MarketPay knowledge and expertise. Backup may include maintaining user access, market data, employee files, and addressing system issues. Duties may include supporting the loading of new survey data and employee files, training new employees, and keeping process documentation up to date. Key backup tasks include updating MarketPay with survey data for Career Tracks matches, reviewing salary movement/economic data, applying aging factors, and ensuring accurate data weighting. The consultant will assist with the coordination or participation in nine major surveys (Mercer IHN, Sullivan Cotter HealthCare, Towers Watson, Mercer MBD, Mercer SIRS, Gallagher Health, CUPA, EduComp, Radford). This role will work closely with MarketPay Compensation Consultant.

Has knowledge of the compensation function and applicable practices and programs as well as knowledge of organization goals, objectives and initiatives.

Knows how to develop and implement compensation programs for the organization and understands how they and other initiatives may impact various areas of human resources.

Must have knowledge of other areas of human resources and business systems knowledge at this level.

Understanding of advanced Excel functions (e.g., VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, INDEX, MATCH, and pivot tables).

Ability to conduct data validation and integrity checks to ensure accurate reporting and analysis.

Possesses advanced analytical skills to conduct diverse analysis and develop and present findings and recommendations.

Willingness to learn new database technologies and Excel features to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

Strong attention to detail when working with data to minimize errors and maintain accuracy.

Demonstrates highly effective written and verbal communication skills in order to present complex information in a clear and concise manner.

Has advanced interpersonal skills to interact with client groups and other areas of human resources as well as to understand and present how compensation can address and support business needs and objectives.

Is able to work in a highly collaborative manner with diverse client groups, other areas of human resources, and members of the organization's management.

Can prioritize competing work assignments and meet deadlines.
