JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
We are searching for a Mechanical Engineering Technologist to join our Mechanical and Electrical Design Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL’s purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC). In this role, you will utilize skill sets consisting of intermediate level abilities relative to concepts, practices and procedures of Drafting and 3-D Modeling.
You will:
Assist research engineering programs needing mechanical design support through collaboration with R&D engineers and engineering support specialists
Participate in meetings and design reviews
Collaborate to address design, material, and component needs; assist in the resolution of issues
Use accepted standards, methods, and techniques to create intermediate 3D solid models for fabricated parts, assemblies, and Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) parts
Create 2D detail drawings for intermediate fabrication parts/assemblies using accepted standards, methods and techniques; may also create schematic/bills of material (BOM) documents
Perform Service Center tasks related to documentation control, copying, archiving (.stp and .x_t), and database entry
Utilize ARL’s Project Lifecycle Management (PLM) software (Teamcenter) to properly archive and perform configuration management of all design documentation
Maintain all required compliance training related to business systems, safety, and security
Build on your knowledge of design software features, techniques, standards, and specifications (particularly ASME Y 14.5)
Provide work status updates to senior personnel and engineering staff
This position will be filled as a Professional level depending upon the candidate’s education and experience. Requires a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a Mechanical Engineering Technology or related discipline. Additional experience and/or experience required for higher level positions.
Required skills/experience areas include:
Support basic / intermediate research utilizing CAD software (Siemens NX preferred)
Create intermediate 3D solid models for fabricated parts and assemblies as well as Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) parts using accepted standards, methods and techniques.
Create 2D detail drawings for intermediate fabrication parts and assemblies using accepted standards, methods and techniques. May also create schematic and bills of material (BOM) documents.
Assist in material selection, tolerance analysis, and manufacturing analysis
Provide work status updates to senior personnel
Participate in design review meetings as requested
Perform tasks related to documentation control, copying, filing, and database entry
Respond to requests for information from purchasing and manufacturing teams
Preferred skills/experience areas include:
Familiarity with mechanical systems and components.
Layout and design using CAD software for component creation, Siemens NX preferred but not required
Documentation of design, manufacturing, and parts lists (BOM)
Design Configuration Management (CM) using a Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software (Siemens Teamcenter preferred) is a plus
Certification or familiarization with ASME Y14.5 standards is a plus
Preferred experience in Microsoft Office and Adobe products
These positions are required to be 100% on-site, but options may exist for a hybrid work from office and work from home scenario dependent upon research requirements.

The pay range for this position, including all possible grades is:
$56,200.00 - $81,500.00
