Under the direction of the Chief Philanthropy Officer, the Philanthropy Director is responsible for qualifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding strong relationships with major donors, developing and growing a robust donor pipeline, and planning and implementing unique engagement and stewardship opportunities to achieve American Forests’ philanthropic goals. The Philanthropy Director should be an entrepreneurial and results-oriented individual who is self-motivated, committed to working at the highest level of quality, able to work both independently and in collaboration, manage multiple priorities, and thrive within a fast-paced, results-oriented office. The Philanthropy Director is adept in working with leadership throughout an organization, and will work closely with colleagues across multiple geographies, different departments, volunteers, and with the philanthropy team.

Relationship Management (70%)

  • Builds and maintains meaningful relationships with a portfolio of 80-120 prospective and current donors with an emphasis on major individual donors using a moves management approach
  • Creates comprehensive engagement strategies, leads cultivation teams, conducts donor visits, makes direct solicitations and closes gifts of $10,000 - $500,000+
  • Conducts in-person and virtual donor visits regularly and often with a goal of at least 100 meaningful visits per year
  • Writes solicitation letters and proposals and stewardship reports
  • Promotes blended gifts, planned giving, and involves peer volunteers, leadership, senior management, and program staff in cultivation as needed
  • Tracks and meets deadlines and maintains up-to-date and accurate donor records and notes in the CRM, including briefings, contact reports, solicitation plans, and activity tracking to inform metrics
  • Coordinates and implements donor recognition. Contributes to Philanthropy’s overall success by assuring individual, team, and budget goals are met or exceeded
  • Develops and implements individual annual and long-range work plans in coordination with the Chief of Philanthropy 

Communications, Donor Relations, and Events (15%)

  • Develops and maintains a high level of knowledge on all aspects of American Forests’ programs and initiatives, including the organization’s emerging 150th Anniversary comprehensive campaign and communicates updates regularly to donors
  • Collaborates closely with the Marketing & Communications team to inform organizational communications and collateral
  • Serves as philanthropy lead to organize fundraising and cultivation events to engage, educate, and connect with prospects and donors
  • This includes coordinating with volunteers, staff and vendors to ensure that events achieve fundraising, cultivation, and stewardship goals

Management of Individual Prospect Pipeline (10%)

  • Works with organizational resources, colleagues, and peer-to-peer networking with volunteers to identify, qualify and track new prospective donors
  • Manages outreach, both internal and external, to advance connections with prospective donors and cultivate those prospects using wealth screening tools and additional research

Other Duties (5%)

  • Supports Philanthropy with other duties as assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree desires; additional experience accepted in lieu of
  • A minimum 6 years of fundraising experience, including making major gift solicitations of $50K and above
  • Experience working with individual donors and volunteer boards to fundraise successfully
  • Excellent interpersonal skills ranging from one-on-one interactions to formal group presentations
  • Ability to write and edit persuasive materials, including grant proposals, reports, letters of inquiry, interim reports, stewardship materials, and program/project summaries
  • Demonstrated ability to function effectively as a member of a team, ensuring close coordination with colleagues
  • Demonstrated ability to accept and apply feedback
  • Self-motivated; able to multi-task with attention to detail and deadlines; can perform successfully without regular supervision
  • High integrity and commitment to excellence, along with superb organizational skills
  • Ensures ethical compliance with fundraising best practices, as defined by the Association for Fundraising Professionals
  • Computer proficiency with various Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), project management software (ClickUp) and with CRM systems (Raiser’s Edge)
  • Passion and commitment to the mission, vision and culture of American Forests
  • A genuine and proven commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility and to the principles of community-centric fundraising
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and available for donor related travel locally, regionally, and nationally

This is a remote position.  

An average of 30% of travel throughout the U.S. and/or to American Forests’ headquarters in Washington D.C. is required to engage in key internal meetings and events and other external stakeholder meetings, events and projects.
