Description
Humana is seeking a Vice President, Tax to lead the department and oversee the tax function for the enterprise. This position is responsible for setting the organization's tax policy and ensuring compliance with all federal, state/region/province, local and applicable tax laws and regulations. In addition to this, this role directs the preparation and filing of tax returns, is responsible for the tax planning and for ensuring the optimal tax minimization strategy while maintaining its good reputation as a compliant taxpayer. The position reports to the SVP of Finance and will work in close collaboration with multiple areas across the business including Accounting, Financial Planning & Analysis, Treasury and Investments, Corporate Strategy and Legal to name a few.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for all non-payroll tax areas, including GAAP and statutory income tax accounting, federal, state and international income taxes, sales, use and property taxes and premium taxes
- Provide leadership and coaching to Corporate Tax group consisting of ~26 associates
- Manage support for tax examinations and appeals processes at the federal and state level. Humana is a participant in the IRS Compliance Assurance Program (“CAP”) and each year as a CAP taxpayer is under a contemporaneous audit
- Drive transformation of tax systems to improve accuracy and efficiency of tax reporting and compliance
- Work closely with Legal and Corporate Development on acquisition and disposition transactions
- Monitor, analyze, and implement changes in tax laws to assess impact to the business and ensure ongoing compliance
- Work closely with Financial Reporting on the quarterly and year-end tax provisions to ensure adherence to GAAP accounting principles
- Manage third-party professional relationships including external auditors, tax advisors and outside counsel
- Report key tax related items to members of the operating committee and provide guidance and advice on areas within the tax function to support strategic decision-making
- Must have an in-depth understanding of the company's various businesses and business processes to adequately support the business segments on tax inquiries relative to their operations
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting
- CPA license
- At least 15 years of relevant tax experience – Deep knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code (including Subchapter L), consolidated returns, state income taxation, ASC 740 and statutory income tax accounting, sales and use taxation, property taxation and premium taxation (including its retaliatory tax aspects)
- 10+ years of leadership positions in a major corporate environment
- Strong analytical skills are required
- Demonstrate excellent communication and presentation skills both verbal and written with all levels of management
- Experienced in handling complex organizational structures, performing tax diligence in acquisitions
- Strong understanding of financial statements and GAAP accounting, including an understanding of tax provision systems
- Acts independently, guided by company policies and executive management strategic objectives
- Inspires action, sets policies, and decides issues which have a significant impact on the failure or success of the overall corporation, organizational function, or business segment
