Tips To Prepare For a Technical Interview

The D-Day has arrived. Today is the day for your technical interview. This exercise can be challenging. And it's all the more true that, for the first time, you are going to do it remotely. But there's no need to panic. With the right preparation and mindset, you will be able to feel more confident and competent. In fact, there are basic guidelines that can help you feel more prepared. Here are our tips for a successful technical interview.

Chose the right place

One of the most important things to keep in mind when preparing for a remote technical interview is to ensure that you are in a quiet place that is comfortable for you, with no distractions. This will help you to focus on the interview and give your best performance. Additionally, take care of your background to ensure that you can concentrate on yourself as much as possible. If it is clean and organized, it will also make a good impression on the interviewer.

You also have to make sure that the place you choose is well-lit and has a neutral background in order to avoid anything that might be distracting like a TV or a window.  It must not be too dark or too bright. And if you have a window behind you, make sure to close the curtains to avoid the sunlight reflecting on your screen.

Check the Technical Points

Another crucial aspect of preparing for a remote technical interview is to ensure that you have a stable internet connection. A poor connection can cause delays and interruptions.. So, test your webcam and microphone to check that they are working properly in order to communicate effectively with the interviewer.

Don’t forget to have the necessary software installed and that it is functioning correctly. This may include programs such as Zoom or Skype for regular video calls, as well as any specialized software that may be required to perform the test task in real-time. It is a good idea to clarify in advance with the company which programs you need to have at the time of the technical interview.

Additionally, make sure to practice using the software and tools that will be used. This will help you to become more familiar with the interface and any features that may be necessary to complete the test task. If you are going to use Zoom for the interview, make sure to familiarize yourself with the different features and settings.

Of course, your computer must be up to date and running smoothly, as all necessary software. It must be able to handle any tasks that may be required. For example, if you are applying for a programming job, make sure that you have the latest version of your preferred programming language installed on your machine.

Explore the Information About The Company

It is important to understand a company's goals and values, as this will help you to connect with the interviewer and determine whether the company is a good fit for you. Researching the company beforehand can also help you to be more prepared for the technical interview and any questions that may be asked.

So, don’t hesitate to look into the company's mission statement, values, and any recent news or projects that they have been working on. This can also help you to come up with thoughtful questions to ask the interviewer. For example, if you are applying for a job at a company that specializes in renewable energy, you can ask about the company's plans for implementing sustainable practices in their operations.

Follow The Rules Of A Regular Interview

Be on time for the interview, as being late can make a bad impression on the interviewer. Be polite and courteous. This will show that you are respectful and professional. Follow the dress code, even if the interview is conducted remotely. Our clothes also affect our sense of self. So it is better to wear regular pants instead of pajamas, even if the other person can’t see it.

Don't be afraid to ask the interviewer questions and clarify any information that interests you. And, most importantly, be honest. If you don't know the answer to a question, tell it to the interviewer. For example, if you are asked about a specific technical term and you are not familiar with it, you can say something like "I am not familiar with that specific concept, but I can research it and get back to you with more information."

Understand The Format

Another important aspect to consider when preparing for a remote technical interview is to understand the format and the structure of the exercise. Some companies may conduct the interview in a single session. Others may have multiple rounds. It often includes a phone screen, a technical test, and a final interview. Knowing the format in advance will help you to better prepare and understand what to expect.

Practice Before The Big Day

You have to practice before a remote technical interview. This way, you will  feel more confident. It gives the right mind for a better chance of success. So, don’t hesitate to interview yourself. Try to find the question that you think is the most difficult to answer. For example, if you are applying for a programming job, you can practice solving coding challenges and explaining your thought process.

Or if you prefer, you can practice your interview skills with a friend or a family member. This can help you to become more comfortable with the format and to get feedback on your responses.

It is also critical to be aware of your body language. It is correct that  the interviewer can't see you in person. But nonverbal cues can still be perceived through the camera. For instance, make sure to make eye contact with the camera and avoid fidgeting or looking away too often.

The way you speak is also very important. Strive to make it clear and use proper grammar during the interview, as this will help you to come across as professional and competent.

Take Care of Yourself

Being relaxed before the interview is of the utmost importance. Get enough sleep, eat well, and take time to prepare yourself mentally. This will help you to be more focused and confident during the interview. Why not try meditation or yoga to help you relax and focus?

And by the way, as we are talking about sleep, be aware of the company's time zone. If the company is in a different time zone than you, it's important to adjust and make sure you are available at the scheduled time.

Don’t Forget To Follow-Up

A follow-up after the interview is highly recommended. In this regard, you can send a thank-you note or an email to the interviewer, in order to be grateful for their time and reiterate your interest in the position. This can help to keep you in the interviewer's mind. It is also a good way to demonstrate your professionalism and enthusiasm.

A last point: while remote jobs are becoming more and more popular, it is certain that remote interviews will become commonplace in the future. Knowing how to prepare for them is, from now on, a must-do.
